Food Security Programme
The main source of livelihood for people living in Sindh is agriculture, but the farmer community itself is very poor often working as tenants on lands of local landlords. Farming is costly due to water shortage and salinity. Droughts are common, causing wide-scale problems including starvation and mass migration.
To address the issue of food insecurity, CWS-P/A has initiated a project in Jhudo Tehsil, Sindh. The area frequently experiences droughts and floods causing acute shortage of irrigation water which in turn affects the agricultural yield. The subsistence farmers face more setbacks due to lack of technical skills, resources and mechanised farming equipment.
The same project has successfully been completed in Tharparkar which is a desert region of southern Pakistan. Our project with the people in Tharparkar focused on improving livelihoods and decreasing food insecurity.
Similarly in this current project, we will again support the local community in distribution and plantation of bair plants, provision of seeds (wheat, mustard & Kitchen Gardening) and provision of Bio Neem Compost. Efforts will be made to improve irrigation system and farmers will create linkages with other stakeholders. The beneficiaries will be given relevant training to improve the overall livelihood and nutrition levels of their families will also improve. The project is being implemented in collaboration with LSRDA and is supported by Canadian Food Grain Bank (CFGB).
