Child Rehabilitation Centre - Bamyan
The Afghan war and conflicts have left damaging repercussions on the country’s infrastructure and its people; no section of the society has felt this more gravely than the children. In Afghanistan 2 million children do not attend schools and only 28.7 per cent of Afghans over the age of 15 can read. Many have suffered loss of parents and have no place to live.. Poverty, displacement, physical disabilities and destroyed infrastructure of schools have forced the children to abandon their education. Most resort to begging or working on the streets as shoe polishers, hawkers or car washers in order to support their families. Aside from apparent physical injuries, these children bear psychological scars from continuous war and violence.
To address the situation, CWS-P/A started the ‘Child Rehabilitation Centres (CRC) in Kabul and Bamyan, with help from a local partner ‘Cooperation Centre for Afghanistan (CCA)’. The project aims to improve mental and physical health of children belonging to marginalised families.
The centres aim to develop the children’s learning ability, improve social skills and promote good attitudes and non aggressive behavior. The kids learn through joyful techniques using discussions, games and other creative activities. They also gain awareness about land mines, health, hygiene, environment protection and human rights. The CRC teaching programmes in Kabul and Bamyan are running in two shifts accommodating 200 students each. The age of these children varies between 7 and 14 years. The children receive access to library facility, computer classes, and sports goods and play ground. They are also served nutritious meal during sessions. This project will end in May, 2008.
